Secure Socket Layer.
Advantages. Collateral.

Whether online shopping or the use of social media channels – personal user data is processed almost everywhere on the Internet. To provide adequate protection against hacker attacks, it is necessary to erect specific barriers in the network. One of these is the so-called SSL certificate for websites and apps. Read here precisely what it is all about and how SSL certificates protect against the dangers of the Internet.

What is an SSL Certificate?
The abbreviation SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. This is a type of encryption that is built into a website to establish a secure connection between the client, here the web browser, and the server. The sensitive data entered – these can be passwords, credit details, and the like – is then transmitted in encrypted form in the form of an Internet protocol so that third parties can no longer read it.

Since the DSGVO came into force, SSL certificates and secure web hosting have become more and more important – DeSight Studio stands for DSGVO compliant web hosting (incl. SSL) based in Germany since 2015.

How can I tell if a page is SSL-encrypted?
Whether SSL encryption is used on a web page can be determined in different ways by the user. First, a security lock appears directly in front of the web address in the URL bar if it is an SSL-encrypted page. Also, modern browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari display the so-called “green address bar” in front of the URL. If the user clicks on it, he can call up further information on the encryption standard and the validity of the certificate.

On the other hand, the URL of an encrypted domain usually begins with “https://.” If only “http://” appears in the bar, an SSL certificate can still be stored. For verification purposes, the same web address should then be entered manually with “https://.” If no SSL certificate is available, an error message will appear stating that the page cannot be opened. If the call with “https” is possible but disappears after every entry in the browser, then it is only a corresponding setting, which the site operator has made in the backend. However, the increased security due to the encryption is still given.

What are the advantages of SSL encryption?
In addition to protection during the transmission of sensitive personal data, the presence of an SSL certificate offers other advantages. For example, the consumer receives greater security in online transactions through

● The encryption of confidential data
● Retrieving unique and authenticated information about the owner of the certificate
● Thorough prior verification by the certification/registration body of the identity of the certificate holder
● Practical algorithms that check whether the data reaches its respective recipient entirely and unaltered
● Protection against malware and cybercrime

Also, an SSL certificate for the homepage of companies is useful from a commercial point of view, because in this way can be advertised with trust and credibility.
