What is an SSL Certificate?
The abbreviation SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. This is a type of encryption that is built into a website to establish a secure connection between the client, here the web browser, and the server. How can I tell if a page is SSL-encrypted?
Whether SSL encryption is used on a web page can be determined in different ways by the user. First, a security lock appears directly in front of the web address in the URL bar if it is an SSL-encrypted page. Also, modern browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari display the so-called “green address bar” in front of the URL. If the user clicks on it, he can call up further information on the encryption standard and the validity of the certificate.
On the other hand, the URL of an encrypted domain usually begins with “https://.” If only “http://” appears in the bar, an SSL certificate can still be stored. For verification purposes, the same web address should then be entered manually with “https://.” If no SSL certificate is available, an error message will appear stating that the page cannot be opened. If the call with “https” is possible but disappears after every entry in the browser, then it is only a corresponding setting, which the site operator has made in the backend. However, the increased security due to the encryption is still given.
